Celtic fans label Peter Lawwell a ‘coward’ after premature closure of AGM

Celtic’s AGM has been closed early by Peter Lawwell.

The meeting was supposed to last for two hours, but we ended up getting about a quarter of that, after it was adjourned for half an hour when the board were booed onto the stage.

Michael Nicholson, Peter Lawwell and other board members were seen in anti-board banners outside the stadium before the meeting. In the end, that was just a taste of what was in store.

The board were booed onto the stage, with a sea of giant red cards. With ‘sack the board’ chants drowning out a video being shown on the projector, Lawwell made the decision to adjourn.

Fans walked out and the meeting resumed, but this didn’t last long. Before a single fan got the chance to ask a question, the meeting was closed.

Today’s events were unprecedented.

Heated interactions are seen on occasion at Celtic AGMs, but the atmosphere of the meeting was nowhere near as chaotic.

Lawwell had clearly seen enough, and finally decided to call the meeting after a second attempt to get it underway.

Fans have made their thoughts clear on X, and the events have clearly divided opinion.

@pablofanque_7 said: “Expect to see protests ramped up in light of this.”

It’s hard to disagree with this given the level of anger that was evident in the room.

Some have aimed their frustrations at the board, with one fan even accusing the whole early finish of being planned.

Another thought that it exposed Lawwell as a coward, given that no Q&A took place at all, but Dermot Desmond’s son Ross was allowed to read out a statement which labelled fans ‘bullies’.

Others were unhappy that fans had allowed the board to call the meeting early with their actions.

@KevinYoung87 described it as an ‘own goal’ for the support, with the board now back into hiding for the foreseeable future.

Another fan called it ’embarrassing and disappointing’, worrying that a new manager will have to deal with the ‘toxic situation’.

Regardless of your feelings on who is at fault for the events at the AGM, what’s undeniable is that they are the most damning representation yet of where fan-club relations are.

Where on earth do we go from here?

I am going to have you apologise to those supporters who have the best interests of the club at heart but I am going to have to draw the meeting to a close.
