Celtic fans were attentive to a comment by Ange Postecoglou on punditry at the World Cup.

The former Parkhead boss remains a much-loved figure among the support, and he doesn’t appear to have lost his ability to get under people’s skin.

Working on the broadcast of Brazil’s knockout win over Japan, in which his ex-player Daizen Maeda carried himself notably well, the Aussie was discussing the Brazilian fear factor.

His wording was particularly interesting.

Ange Postecoglou’s Rangers dig: ‘That actually mean something…’

Discussing how the Japanese players would handle the enormity of the occasion on ITV Sport, Postecoglou said: “I think Brazil does [still carry a fear factor].

“They walk out with a shirt and five stars that actually mean something…”

The comment has been widely interpreted on social media as a reference to the five stars on Rangers jerseys.

Unlike most uses of stars on clubs’ badges, the Ibrox side justify their five stars by saying that each represents ten league titles.

The use is even more ironic now that Celtic have 55 league titles of their own — of course, Celtic have a solitary star on their jersey, in honour of their 1967 European Cup win, something unmatched elsewhere in Glasgow.

As for Postecoglou, the wait continues for a return to management after his quickfire sacking from Nottingham Forest early last season.

He had been dismissed by Tottenham just months earlier, despite delivering a historic Europa League triumph in Bilbao in his final match.

Postecoglou is presently linked with the Scotland vacancy, but there doesn’t seem to be any real weight to the rumour at the moment.

Ange Postecoglou’s two years at Celtic

When Postecoglou took over from Neil Lennon, Celtic had just finished 25 points behind Rangers in a disastrous season behind closed doors.

He lost all of his first three away league matches and dropped down to the Europa League, but signings such as Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota and Josip Juranovic eventually led a new-look team to a League Cup win.

In the end, Celtic won the league against a Rangers team which had made the Europa League final. The season after, the best was yet to come.

Despite failing to get a win in the Champions League, the Celts steamrolled the league, and Postecoglou bowed out in his last game by delivering a treble.
