Celtic fans send a message to Peter Lawwell as his last day at Parkhead nears

Peter Lawwell’s time at Celtic officially comes to an end this week as he walks away from the club he has had an involvement with for well over two decades.

Lawwell announced his Celtic resignation the week before Christmas and now, it’s almost time for his tenure as chairman to be over.

As the Celtic CEO, Lawwell presided over the most successful period of the club’s domestic history whilst building a financial powerhouse.

And for that he should be commended. However, Celtic’s failures in Europe under his stewardship not just as CEO, but also as chairman should not be forgotten.

How will you remember Peter Lawwell’s time at Celtic?

But as Lawwell’s tenure at Celtic ended with his statement taking a parting shot at the Hoops support, and it seems that the feeling is being reciprocated as the chairman exits the Celtic Way for the last time.

Celtic fans sarcastically thank Peter Lawwell for his service

The two times Peter Lawwell has stepped down from Celtic have been at the most toxic periods in the club’s recent history.

The COVID season forced his resignation as the CEO and this time, the Celtic board are currently presiding over a season that has all but collapsed in on itself.

And as Lawwell prepares to depart Parkhead for the final time, Celtic supporters have sarcastically thanked him for his service.

@CollectCelticFC harked back to Celtic’s poor European record and said, “On the day Peter Lawwell leaves Celtic his legacy will be, his European record which him and Board could not understand.

“He allowed Rangers to build a far better European coefficient so that if they win league this season, they automatically qualify for group stages. Thanks Pete.”

@Troymcclure869 is certainly not forgetting the European record under Lawwell’s tenure, “Peter Lawwell has been a great domestic CEO at Celtic. FACT.

“However, he has also presided over some significant failures not least continuously being unprepared for Euro fixtures and consequently having a deplorable Euro record while smaller less wealthy outfits humble us yearly.”

Can’t really argue with that as @lionsroar67 makes the exact same point, “Peter Lawwell was the right man at the right time when he joined as CEO in 2003.

“He did fantastic to stabilise the club’s spending at a time it was out of control whilst also increasing revenue from a commercial standpoint

“Issue is his time should have been up latest in 2016.”

However, there are some who just can’t see past his failings:

And finally:

Celtic’s search for a new chairman

So, as it stands right now, Celtic are still searching for a new chairman to take over from Lawwell indefinitely.

What is strange is that there has been no inkling on who that person could be as Brian Wilson takes the position temporarily.

There has been nary a rumour nor a whiff of information from the media as it appears Celtic are keeping their cards close to their chest.

With 2026 closing in, let’s hope the search for a new chairman was as in-depth and detailed as the search for Wilfried Nancy was.
