Pierre van Hooijdonk is at the centre of a controversy in the Netherlands.

The prolific ex-striker is under question for his involvement in the transfer of his son Sydney, who was once linked with Celtic.

Van Hooijdonk Sr. is a club legend at NAC Breda, where he scored 81 goals before moving to Glasgow in 1995.

His son followed in his footsteps by breaking through at the club, though his exit earlier this year has drawn controversy over a potential conflict of interest.

Pierre van Hooijdonk accused of ‘conflict of interest’ in the Netherlands

Van Hooijdonk Jr. returned to NAC last January after struggling in spells with Bologna, Norwich and Cesena.

The club have struggled in the Eredivisie this season, but in January, the striker was their top scorer with five goals.

Unusually, he left on a free transfer this January, joining Estrela Amadora in Portugal. His father was working as a technical advisor to the club at the time.

Now, Voetbal International report that an investigation is underway, with club shareholders suspecting that he was acting as his son’s agent in the move.

The club had reportedly rejected an earlier €500,000 offer from the Lisbon club, angering Van Hooijdonk Jr.

Shareholder Karel Vrolijk said: “I find what the club is doing morally reprehensible. We demanded an investigation.

“We are not doing that ourselves. We expect the foundation board to do so. We do not have the results yet, because the chairman is currently on vacation.

“There was another meeting last week. Jack Antonissen and I were there on behalf of the certificate holders, Martijn Vermeeren on behalf of the foundation board, and Henk van Koeveringe as Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

“General Director Remco Oversier, Technical Director Peter Maas, and Technical Affairs Advisor Pierre van Hooijdonk also attended.

“It was stated there that Peter Maas, as Technical Director, was no longer involved in the deal regarding Sydney van Hooijdonk. The further investigation is and was a demand of the certificate holders.”

Van Hooijdonk Sr. has accused the journalists involved in the story of “spreading slander”.
