Characters like Scott Brown simply don’t exist in the modern game anymore – and if they do, they are a dying breed.
The Celtic hero was no-nonsense on the field of play, and he isn’t any different off it, as he proved during a recent exchange with a Rangers fan.
Brown joined Celtic in 2007 from Hibernian. At the time, Rangers were as competitive as ever, but then came their relegation to the lower leagues in 2012.
Appearing on Midnite Sports’ Boxed In series to go head-to-head with several Rangers fans, Brown was challenged by one supporter who sought to undermine the Celtic legend’s legacy by arguing that Rangers’ pre-demotion trophy haul vastly eclipsed Brown’s early-career success.
But in typical Brown fashion, and this is a snippet of what he said, he verbally annihilated the Gers supporter.
Rangers fan: “What I would say is, though. We have won eight trophies in comparison to your four during that five-year span, and we have progressed really far in Europe. The argument would then be…”
Brown: “How were you paying those players?”
Rangers fan: “None of my business. I wasn’t on the board.”
Brown: “I was just asking a question. I think that’s probably why. You were overpaying. Look at what happens now. Still paying the price for that. You won a couple of seasons. Well done.”
Should Scotland employ foreign referees to officiate Celtic v Rangers games? 😯🤔🤨

Celtic hero issues harsh trophy truth to Rangers fan during brilliant exchange
Even during Celtic’s worst season in a very, very long time, Martin O’Neill still won a domestic double.
What’s even worse for those at Ibrox is that they managed to finish third in the Premiership table after going in as favourites before the hectic and dramatic post-split fixtures.
But that’s just the story of what has been happening in Glasgow for a very long time now.
As Brown rightfully pointed out, he has been retired for four years now, yet Rangers are yet to win the title, and when they did, it was behind closed doors under Steven Gerrard.
Brown continued to verbally jab at Rangers and how they ‘capitulate’ every year when the pressure gets ramped up, as it did during the final few months of the recent campaign.
Rangers fan: “In your first five seasons at Celtic, before Rangers got demoted down to the lower leagues. You won two league titles. We won three.”
Brown: “That’s good, eh.”
Rangers fan: “We won two Scottish Cups. You won one. We won three League Cups. You won one.”
Brown: “Just warming up, weren’t I?!”
Rangers fan: “We also got to a UEFA Cup final as well during that time.”
Brown: “Aye, you did alright in the UEFA Cup final.”
Rangers fan: “You ever play in one of them. Got close?”
Brown: “There is no point in playing it if you aren’t going to win it. I was too busy worrying about the Champions League at that point.”
Rangers fan: “How did you do in that?”
Brown: “We got to the last 16. Got beat. But to be fair, the last 16 in Europe. Playing away to AC Milan and Juventus was alright.”
Rangers fan: “What I would say is, though. We have won eight trophies in comparison to your four during that five-year span, and we have progressed really far in Europe.
“The argument would then be…”
Brown: “How were you paying those players?”
Rangers fan: “None of my business. I wasn’t on the board.”
Brown: “I was just asking a question. I think that’s probably why. You were overpaying. Look at what happens now. Still paying the price for that. You won a couple of seasons. Well done.
“But you are still paying the price for it. What is it? Ten or 12 years. I have been retired for four years, and you still haven’t won it – you won the title behind closed doors. There was nobody there. You had no pressure on you.
“All the pressure was on us, and we dealt with the pressure in front of 60,000. You couldn’t deal with the pressure in front of 50,000 fans. You got so far, then capitulated every year.”
Brown’s trophy haul at Celtic compared to Rangers
There is no doubt that Brown is a modern-day Celtic legend, who not only talked the talk wherever he went, but also backed it up time and time again.
That’s what made him even more entertaining to watch.
As mentioned above, the all-action midfielder moved to Parkhead from Easter Road in 2007 and proceeded to win a staggering 22 trophies during that period, far more than those at Ibrox have lifted.
- Brown’s trophy haul since 2007 at Celtic: 22
- Rangers’ trophy haul since 2007: 10
