Celtic fans have witnessed a number of quality players grace the Parkhead for decades now.

Going as far back as the Lisbon Lions to the present day, watching the likes of Jimmy Johnstone, Henrik Larsson and Lubomir Moravcik to name but a few has had the Celtic fans spoiled.

Celtic fans will always debate players from different eras and where they rank amongst the best in the world but a list from Four Four Two has ranked two former players in the current 100 best players in the world to date.

Celtic treble winner Jeremie Frimpong ranked 24th in the world

Jeremie Frimpong arrived in Glasgow as a fresh-faced 18-year-old after Celtic paid Man City an undisclosed fee for the young fullback.

The Dutch defender’s enthusiasm for playing for Celtic was infectious which was summed up after he was dismissed in Celtic’s League Cup final win over Rangers in 2019.

Frimpong went on to make 51 appearances for the Hoops scoring three goals and creating eight assists before Celtic sold him to Bayer Leverkusen for £11.5m in January 2021.

Celtic double-winner Virgil van Dijk ranked 15th in the world

Virgil van Dijk was purchased by Celtic in 2013 by Neil Lennon for around the £2.6m mark from FC Groningen.

The Dutch defender went on to make 115 appearances in the green and white hoops scoring 15 goals over two seasons at the club.

Van Dijk strolled the Scottish game and goals like the one below that convinced Southampton to shell out £13m for the Dutchman.

Now at Liverpool, van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the world which can be attributed, in part, to the time he spent developing at Celtic during his two years in Glasgow.

Are there players in the Celtic squad right now that could make this list sometime in the future? It’s hard to say but it’s great to see how the Parkhead club can develop relatively unknown players into one of the best in the world.
