Former Celtic captain Scott Brown is enjoying his first experience of management at Fleetwood Town and can’t wait to get into the competitive English League One action.

Brown’s outfit picked up a 2-1 victory in a closely-fought encounter against Dundee United over the weekend, coming out on top against former teammates such as Charlie Mulgrew, Tony Watt and Steven Fletcher.

Fleetwood now have one more pre-season match before a weekend kick-off away to Port Vale – it will be the former Bhoy’s first ever competitive match as a manager.

And Brown is looking to make good progress in the league compared to the club’s performance last year, when they narrowly avoided relegation to League Two.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “It’s been good. It’s different because, obviously, I retired and then got this job two days later. It’s a big change for me but everyone has helped me out. The chairman [Andy Pilley] has given me a lot of time, help and understanding to come into a huge football club like this.

“League One is a fantastic league. I can’t wait for the competitive stuff to start, you miss that. But before the games, I have been looking forward to seeing what we’ve worked on all week.

“And against Dundee United, I felt the understanding was brilliant. That’s the way we want to press, the way we want to play. There’s always going to be mistakes, there’s always going to be people giving the ball away. But it’s about reactions and how they get the ball back. The attitude was incredible.

“For me, I believe this club should be doing a lot better than what we did last season. That’s my job now. To make sure that happens.”

Everyone associated with Celtic is intrigued about how he gets on in the dugout, which has obvious implications for a distant future back in Glasgow.

He’s had a full summer of solid preparation and hopefully we see him hit the ground running and really make an impact.

Brown was always an incredible leader on the pitch, but can he translate that into an elite coaching career?
