Celtic learn fate as SPFL punish Parkhead support for use of pyro vs St Mirren

Celtic have been punished by the SPFL after the club were charged for fans’ use of pyro in the final league game against St Mirren last season.

James Forrest created Celtic history against The Buddies when he scored a last-gasp equaliser to ensure that he scored in every season since making his Hoops debut back in 2010.

However, Celtic fans also created a memory that the SPFL didn’t take too kindly to after fans let off pyrotechnics prior to kick-off in the season finale Trophy Day.

The SPFL charged Celtic back in June and now, the Parkhead club has learned their fate.

SPFL deliver ‘suspended reduction’ of ticket sales to Celtic fans

The SPFL have told 200 Celtic supporters that they will be banned from Celtic Park should the use of pyro be used again within the season ahead.

The statement on the SPFL website said, “Celtic were found to have breached SPFL Rules H36 and H37 in respect of the William Hill Premiership match involving Celtic v St Mirren and the following sanction was imposed.

“A suspended reduction of 200 tickets in the area of the stadium where the display took place for one future match in SPFL competitions at Celtic Park, to be triggered in the event of another breach of SPFL Rules H36 and/or H37 through pyrotechnic use by supporters of the Club in that area of the stadium in any SPFL competition on, or before, 30 June 2026.”

Basically, if the Green Brigade launch any more pyrotechnics before the end of this season, the SPFL will ban 200 of them for one fixture this season.

The SPFL pyro charge will open up debate for Celtic fans

Some Celtic supporters enjoy the use of pyro at fixtures. Others do not.

There is no doubt that the devices do create a special atmosphere and visually they look great. However, they are currently banned in all stadia in Scotland and Europe and this time, it’s not the club who are being punished.

With 200 fans being threatened with a ban, the latest charge is sure to open up the debate on whether pyro should be allowed to be used in safe zones at Celtic Park.

The debate may well continue but as the use of the devices remains illegal, Celtic supporters will be punished if they are used within the confines of Parkhead this season.
