Celtic-linked Valentin Rosier "pleasantly surprised" with Marseille link
Celtic-linked Sporting Lisbon centre-back Valentin Rosier has identified Marseille as a club he could never say no to.
Rosier was linked with the French club whilst Celtic were said to have tabled an offer to Lisbon for the double-winner. According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Rosier is worth around €7million [£6m].
The right-back has had an impressive season in Turkey as he spent a loan spell there with Besiktas. He bagged seven assists from a defensive position, and would go on to win the league title.
However, despite the speculation linking him with Parkhead, Rosier appears to know where he wants to play next. When asked about links to Marseille, he gave more than a strong hint that he would be up for it.
As quoted by Le10Sport, Rosier said: “The rumor of an arrival at OM? I saw that. I was surprised, pleasantly surprised. I don’t know, my agents are busy. Would OM please me? Yes. It remains one of the biggest clubs in France. Can you refuse OM? I don’t think so.”
Celtic may need to move quickly to bag Valentin Rosier
Rosier undoubtedly seems to fit the bill for a potential new Celtic full-back. He’s attack-minded, has a track record of assists in the position, and is now a title-winner too. He already has the kind of winning mentality we often look to develop into young players.
However, Celtic don’t appear to be at the forefront of Rosier’s mind. It’s clear that if Marseille are to come in for him, he’ll be off in a heartbeat. That is of course presuming he would get a chance to speak to them.
This is a signing that would go a long way to easing Celtic fans’ concerns regarding the right-back position. With Anthony Ralston’s contract having been extended for another year, there’s a panic that we won’t strengthen sufficiently. The signing of Rosier would be a sign that we are indeed prioritising quality over quantity.
Whether we would splash as much as £6m on a new right-back? It’s difficult to say. This feels like a summer where Celtic will be looking for as many bargains as they can. Considering we need a total overhaul of the playing squad, Rosier would be one of many arrivals.
Nobody is certain of how much the new manager has been given to spend. Fingers crossed it’s the exact same figure that Eddie Howe would’ve been given had he decided to take the job on.
But if we want Rosier, we need to move quickly. His eyes are already being drawn elsewhere, and that’s always a danger in the summer window.
In other news, Celtic could be setting themselves up for a transfer blunder after a ridiculous reported valuation emerged.
