Young Celtic loanee Luca Connell has helped Queen’s Park into the Scottish Championship after a play-off win against Airdrie this afternoon.

The aggregate score was tied at 1-1 heading into today’s final second leg clash, but it was the Glasgow side who came out on top with a 2-1 win on the day.

A dramatic late penalty in extra-time from Simon Murray sealed the deal after goals from Connor Smith and Rhys McCabe for each side.

Luca Connell crucial to promotion bid

Connell played a prominent role today, completing 90 minutes before being substituted off by manager Owen Coyle heading into the final half an hour.

The Irish youth international has been pivotal for the Spiders throughout the campaign, making 32 appearances in total. Along the way, he managed to contribute seven goals and five assists.

There’s been real ambition at Queen’s Park over the last couple of years and they could return to Celtic for more loan signings this summer given the success of this one.

Connell’s contract at the Bhoys expires in 2023 and it remains to be seen whether or not he will have a future at the club.

It’s likely that at the very least he gets an opportunity in pre-season to show Ange Postecoglou if he’s made any progress.

In any case, congratulations to him today. I’m sure there’ll be great celebrations with the Queen’s Park squad.

Commiserations to Jonathan Afolabi, another young Celtic loanee, who was on the losing Airdrie side.
