Celtic loanee Jonathan Afolabi, who recently joined Dundee, feels that the hard work he did during the summer at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training centre won him the move to Dens, the Dundee FC website reports.

Afolabi was one of the players who returned to Celtic training on a regular basis during lockdown, and he feels that the hard work he put in now has reaped it’s reward.

“Put in the hard yards”

“It was tough coming back, we had to be distance from each other and there was only limited numbers training, so we did a lot of fitness work and put in the hard yards to get the rewards and I guess it’s paying off now” Afolabi said, as quoted by the official Dundee website.

Neil Lennon must have been very impressed by how well Afolabi performed in the socially distanced training. 67HH reported that Afolabi signed a new deal with Celtic before completing his loan move to Dens.

The move is the right one for the player. After all, his chances at Celtic are going to be limited this season. The Hoops currently have four strikers in the first-team squad. At the moment there is really no place for a fifth.

Pressure will be on to win games

Afolabi can now test himself at a team who are looking to get promoted to the Premiership. In a way, the pressure will be quite similar to what Afolabi will face at Celtic. Dundee will be looking to win most weeks, just like Celtic are looking to win every week.

Hopefully Afolabi is able to hold down a regular place in the Dundee first-team for the rest of the season. It would give him plenty of confidence going forward for the rest of the season, and also his career with Celtic going forward.

Who knows, a good season with Dundee could see Afolabi in contention for a Celtic first-team place next season. It is up to him to continue to put in that hard work that has seemingly impressed Neil Lennon.

In other news, Celtic transfer target Barry Douglas could be sold this week by Leeds United.
