Shin Yamada’s loan spell in Germany took another frustrating turn this weekend.
The Celtic forward was left entirely out of Preußen Münster’s matchday squad for their 2. Bundesliga clash against 1. FC Magdeburg.
The omission comes in the immediate wake of severe turbulence at the relegation-threatened side following a bruising 6-0 defeat to Dynamo Dresden last week – Yamada was an unused substitute for that match.
Not long after, Preußen Münster parted ways with their manager, Alexander Ende, in a desperate bid to steer the team out of the relegation zone, U23 coach Kieran Schulze-Marmeling was handed the interim reins.
And now Yamada finds himself in a much darker place.
Was Shin Yamada unfairly treated at Celtic?

As is often the case when a team is fighting for survival, the new interim boss opted for a drastic tactical shake-up.
Schulze-Marmeling made several sweeping changes to the squad to face Magdeburg, heavily favouring more experienced, physical options in attack.
Unfortunately for the Celtic loanee, Yamada was a casualty of this overhaul and was frozen out of the 20-man squad completely.
It made no difference to Münster’s team performance, as they lost 3-1 at home to relegation rivals 1.FC Magdeburg, and they are now rooted to the bottom of Germany’s second-tier.

Yamada’s stats at Celtic and Münster this season
Since arriving in Europe last summer from Kawasaki Frontale, Yamada has found it incredibly difficult to find his footing in front of goal.
During the first half of the 2025/26 season at Celtic, the Japanese forward made just eight appearances in the Scottish Premiership, failing to register a goal or assist. Mostly utilised as a late substitute, he couldn’t dislodge the established attacking options, prompting his January loan move to Germany.
Unfortunately, his time in the 2. Bundesliga hasn’t sparked the revival he desperately needed.
Before being dropped this weekend, Yamada made five league appearances for Preußen Münster, accumulating just 105 minutes of football. He currently sits on zero goals and zero assists for the struggling German side.
