Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro is many things.

He’s fast, he’s direct, he’s an excellent tackler and he’s been a revelation for Celtic. Against Dundee United, he looked like the complete midfielder, scoring a beautiful goal past Benjamin Siegrist.

However, a Civil War-stopping centre-forward (BBC)? Not so much.

In a Q+A with Celtic TV, Ismaila Soro identified his countryman Didier Drogba as his hero growing up (Twitter).

“He’s very strong, he [scores] a lot of goals.”

Soro also identified Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kanté as an inspiration. Now we have to wonder if Soro is aiming to combine Drogba’s goalscoring heroics with the midfield industry of the two-time Premier League winner Kanté.

Funnily enough, Didier Drogba was once linked to Celtic (Planet Football). Allegedly, Momo Sylla identified Drogba as a target for Celtic in 2001, but warned that he wouldn’t be anywhere near the first team. At that time, you’ll remember, Celtic had greats like John Hartson, Chris Sutton and David Fernandez up front.

Oh, and obviously Henrik Larsson.

Instead, Drogba joined Guingamp, scoring 17 times in his first season.

Celtic fans love Ismaila Soro

Hoops supporters were quick to offer their affection for the smiley Ivorian midfielder, who has been sensational in the Hoops so far this season.

Safe to say, Soro is beloved at Celtic. We’re chief amongst his fans, and have been for a considerable length of time.

He makes everything easier for the Bhoys, in both attacking and defensive scenarios, with his incredible work-rate and propensity to move the ball forward.

Making yourself a fan favourite when supporters are locked out of stadia is some ask. Yet, the Drogba fan Ismaila Soro has done it with aplomb.
