Celtic "not too far away" from Boli Mbombo deal
Celtic manager Neil Lennon says the club are close to sealing a deal for Rapid Vienna left-back Boli Mbombo. The Belgian 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow in recent weeks given Celtic’s lack of options in the defensive position.
The club recently lost long-term servant Emilio Izaguirre following the end of his contract while speculation about Kieran Tierney moving on continues to grow by the day.
That means that the Hoops probably need to sign two left-backs this summer. And Lennon says a move for one of them is close.
He told the Scottish Sun: “As for Bolingoli-Mbombo, we are not too far away and he will be another good addition to the squad.
“He gives us competition at left- back. He’s strong, athletic and good on the ball.”
Mbombo deal would be a good one
A brief look at Mbombo’s YouTube highlights shows that he does possess all the attributes Celtic would be looking for in a full-back. The Belgian looks very pacey and strong while he also looks to have a good final ball.
He’s missed just eight league games in two seasons since signing for the Austrians while he’s also sampled both Champions League and Europa League football in the past.
Time will tell whether the defender is a replacement for Tierney or whether he’s being brought in to bolster our ranks. However, it’s pleasing to see Celtic acting positively again with the deal for Mbombo. The board can’t be accused of taking the easy option so far this summer. It’s encouraging to see.
