If Celtic go on to secure the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup this season, it will be the eighth treble won in the club’s history, setting a new world record.
The Bhoys won their first treble back in 1966/67 under the legendary Jock Stein. The haul of trophies that year included the European Cup and Celtic remain just one of seven sides to have won a treble that features Europe’s greatest prize.
At the domestic level, Celtic have won a sensational seven trebles. That total is currently tied for the most ever in world football alongside a Rangers club that earned their seven between 1949 and 2003 before heading for financial ruin. Now, an eighth would send the Bhoys clear and standing tall at the top, with others such as Linfield on five and Paris Saint-Germain on four.

The generation of Celtic domination
Unbelievably, five of the seven trebles that have already been lifted by the Celts have come in this century. Martin O’Neill delivered the first of those and was subsequently followed by Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon. Now it’s Ange Postecoglou’s turn to shoot for clean sweep glory having already won the Scottish League Cup this term.
This generation of Celtic supporters have enjoyed a volume of domestic success like no other in the entire, lengthy history of the football club. These truly are special times to be following the Bhoys.
An eighth treble is not done yet, of course. Two points are required to clinch the Premiership title, while Inverness Caledonian Thistle face us in an early-June Scottish Cup final. As we know all too well, the Highland side are more than capable of punching above their weight and will be giving everything for a giant-killing.
Still, Celtic are clearly red-hot favourites to lift it all and there’s a real possibility that the next few weeks will deliver significant joy and celebration.
If Postecoglou’s team stay focused and keep playing the football that has made them almost unstoppable in Scotland this season then they’ll write their own chapter in the Celtic story that will be forever remembered.
