Celtic social media channels will be silent until Monday night in an effort to draw attention to vile abuse suffered by players and staff members on a regular basis.

The club announced the measures on Wednesday, alongside other clubs and organisations involved in sport across Scotland and the rest of the UK.

A statement said: “Through various social media platforms Celtic players, staff and supporters for some time have been subjected to racial and sectarian attacks and horrendous personal abuse – this is something which simply has to stop.

“Abusing someone because of the colour of their skin, abusing an individual due to their religion, unacceptable personal attacks or pathetically mocking the death of a loved one – our players, staff and supporters have, tragically, experienced it all through social media.

“We must all make a stand and together defeat this negative, damaging behaviour which inflicts so much harm.”

Celtic have now released a new video with messages from club figures such as John Kennedy and Scott Brown, re-iterating their stance.

The club’s channels will be silent from 3pm today until 11:59pm on Monday.

Social media has become a cornerstone of the club’s communication strategy, so it’s an interesting initiative, especially on a derby weekend.

There is pressure on companies such as Instagram and Twitter to better police their platforms after a number of concerning incidents involving footballers over the last few months.

Anything that sends a message abuse will not be tolerated is welcomed, especially when led by those who experience that abuse more than most.

In other news, John Kennedy has spoken out against media reports linking him with the Celtic sporting director job.
