Celtic are just one win away from retaining the Scottish Premiership league title after Aberdeen beat Rangers 2-0 at Pittodrie this afternoon.
A goal from Celtic loanee Liam Scales opened the scoring for the Dons. Bojan Miovski then stretched their advantage with an expert header in the 57th minute. Barry Robson’s side were well worth the victory.
It means, that despite the Bhoys drawing at home to Motherwell yesterday, Celtic end the weekend a massive 13 points clear of Rangers with just five games remaining. Michael Beale’s outfit can only hit a maximum of 94 points before the end of the campaign with Celtic already on 92.
When Celtic can win the league
That means a Celtic victory on matchday 34 against as-yet-unknown opponents would clinch the title with four games to spare. The SPFL are expected to announce Celtic’s remaining five fixtures early this week.
We do know the date of matchday 34, however. It takes place on the weekend of May 6th and 7th. So pencil in that weekend as potentially one of Celtic celebration.
The victory is a big one for Scales on a personal level, too, who had talked with confidence about this match-up and stated his belief that Aberdeen could win for the first time against Rangers in years. Fair play to him for backing those words up with a big performance and even a goal.
It’s been a dramatic week of Premiership action all in. It sets the scene for a massive Scottish Cup semi-final next Sunday between Celtic and Rangers.
The Bhoys know that a treble is distinctly possible this season while Beale’s team will be desperate to win a consolation prize after another season of failure.
Celtic will be favourites and hopefully Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys can live up to the billing at Hampden.
