Celtic outshine rivals again as the Postecoglou effect is felt in major Champions League earnings

Celtic earned a whopping £25.5million in prize money from UEFA following their return to the UEFA Champions League this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side endured a largely frustrating campaign, despite some good performances, with just two points taken from a possible 18 in Group F.

The Hoops are now out of Europe until next season, but the campaign has still been our best in years from a financial point of view.

The Twitter account Swiss Ramble have been taking a look at Champions League earnings today.

In one of their many tweets, they compared the earnings of ourselves and our cross-city rivals Rangers.

As we know, the Ibrox club were officially crowned the worst team in Champions League group stage history earlier this week, and that was reflected in their performance based prize money of £0.

Their total income from UEFA was €20.4million (£17.9million). In comparison, Celtic’s was €29.1million (£25.5million).

Celtic made the majority of their money from the €15.6million participation fee, dished out to each of the 32 group stage clubs.

€1.9million was made in total for our two draws against Shakhtar Donetsk, while we also received €3.6million from the TV pot, more than Rangers as a result of us being the Scottish champions.

Finally, our higher position in UEFA’s 10-year coefficient table meant we received €9.1million from the coefficient payment.

This money doesn’t include anything raised directly by the club, like ticket or hospitality sales.

When everything is added together, the true income is likely to be nearer £35million.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without Ange Postecoglou coming to the club and leading us to the league title last season. The size of that triumph is felt in these figures and even more good news could soon arrive.

If we can win the league this season, it’ll be worth the same to us again next campaign. That’s the challenge for Ange and his players.
