Celtic pair with 12 goal involvements combined this season yet to ‘convince’ Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton hasn’t been the most optimistic in his latest spiel about Celtic.

The Hoops return to Scottish Premiership action on Sunday after the international break as they take on Dundee at Dens Park.

And Sutton has been writing in his Daily Record column about two of Celtic’s best players so far this season, as far as goal involvements are concerned.

Of course, they are Benjamin Nygren and Kelechi Iheanacho, recruited in the summer for a combined £2m.

Sutton wants more from Benjamin Nygren & Kelechi Iheanacho

Nygren has delivered four goals and four assists in his 13 games thus far, while Iheanacho has netted three goals in six appearances.

The Nigerian also has an assist to his name, but Sutton is still sat on the fence with regards to both players and what they can bring to Celtic.

Sutton says Nygren is yet to totally convince him, while Iheanacho hasn’t been mobile enough as a central striker for him.

Sutton said: “Celtic’s much-talked about mistakes in the last baffling recruitment effort which will see a raft of those signed not actually being involved at Dundee tomorrow. Which says it all.

“Those who joined and will be at Dens Park have sporadically caught the eye. Sebastian Tounekti dazzled in his first couple of games, but we don’t know if he has consistency.

“Benjamin Nygren has popped up with some goals, but I wouldn’t judge him as a central midfielder and I’m yet to be convinced overall as yet. Kelechi Iheanacho hasn’t seemed mobile enough in the central striker role, though that may come.”

Nygren has struggled in Europe

Nygren has been in the door at Parkhead longer than Iheanacho so it’s fairer to judge the Swede more than the Nigerian at the moment.

The former FC Nordsjælland star came with a decent reputation and there’s no doubt Celtic fans have seen glimpses of his quality.

His best games thus far was against newly-promoted Livingston as his brace secured a comfortable 3-0 win in August.

However, he’s gone missing in the Champions League play-off and Europa League games, which is a big concern.

Nygren was particularly bad against Braga at Celtic Park, although nobody bar Sebastian Tounekti earned pass marks that night.

Sutton’s point is relevant because while Nygren has eight goal involvements so far, we need to see more from him in that central midfield position.
