Celtic player ratings vs Bayern Munich as 7/10 stars keep Champions League tie alive

Oh what might have been for Celtic in this evening’s Champions League tie vs Bayern Munich.

It was an energy-sapping 90 or so minutes for the players on the pitch with the full-backs finding it particularly difficult at times even despite the special atmosphere from the supporters.

Yet the adrenaline was pumping after less than 30 seconds when Nicolas Kuhn had the ball nestling in the back of the Bayern net with a curling effort following a clever run.

It was ruled out for an offside run made by Adam Idah but it got the support bouncing, full of optimism until just before the break.

Michael Olise fired the visitors ahead after a lucky break from a Greg Taylor challenge before Harry Kane did what he does in the Champions League after the break when he volleyed home from a corner.

Daizen Maeda reduced the deficit after moving through the middle as striker for his side and he was unfortunate not to add to his tally again while Alistair Johnston had an effort batted away my Manuel Neuer in stoppage time.

Still, the knockout playoff tie remains alive ahead of the trip to the Allianz Arena next week.

And here 67 Hail Hail takes a look at the player ratings from the home side this evening in Glasgow…

Celtic player ratings vs Bayern Munich

Kasper Schmeichel – 6

Didn’t expect Olise to go near-post with his effort and couldn’t keep it out. Had no chance at Kane’s goal as he was left with the freedom of Glasgow.

Alistair Johnston – 5

Inexplicable where he was going for Kane’s goal. Left the big Englishman completely unmarked inside the six-yard box and Celtic were punished. Was also similarly caught out in the first-half and only saved by Kane hitting the side netting.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 6

Won plenty of aerial balls and showed how good his reading of the game is at times. Like the rest of his defensive teammates, caught under the ball more than once including for Kane’s volley.

Auston Trusty – 6

Had his moments at the back with interceptions and headed clearances but couldn’t thwart Kane and co. who took their chances when they came. Looked to have taken a knock before Bayern’s second from the corner.

Greg Taylor – 5

A bit powderpuff when attempting to block Michael Olise and the ex-Crystal Palace youngster found the net for the opener. Replaced after 65 minutes.

Callum McGregor – 6

Most of his evening was snapping into tackles in the midfield and going backwards or sideways to recycle possession but was too often swarmed when he had the ball so had to pop it off quickly.

Arne Engels – 6

Did a lot of the dirty work in the midfield but also looked to link play with some clever passing. Decent set-piece delivery but never worked out. Did go down under a Dayot Upamecano challenge which might’ve been a penalty but the referee refused the call after a lengthy VAR check.

Reo Hatate – 6

If he had perhaps a bit more composure he might have made more of an effort at the edge of the box. Really slack on the ball at times but grew into the game a bit. Looked shattered as the match wore on.

Daizen Maeda – 7

Didn’t have any sort of chance to stretch his legs on the wing as he was forced to defend for the most-part. Deployed through the middle when Jota replaced Idah and had a lot more success to run at the backline and use his pace. Desperately close to a goal after forcing an error but put it wide but did eventually find the net after really hard work.

Nicolas Kuhn – 7

Stunned the stadium within 30 seconds when he cut inside and curled the ball into the corner only to have it ruled out for offside. Looked dangerous and had the Bayern defenders nervous throughout as he constantly pushed to attack. Eventually replaced by Yang.

Adam Idah – 6

Used his pace and power to good use in the first-half before fading a bit but Bayern’s defence were just too strong at times. Always a willing runner and unfortunate with some calls. Eventually subbed.

Jota (sub) – 4

Had an effort on goal but sent it over the crossbar.

Jeffrey Schlupp (sub) – 4

Defensively sound when he came on and sent in one particularly dangerous cross at the other end which wasn’t attacked properly.

Yang (sub) – 6

Teed up Daizen for the Celtic goal with an immediate impact from a corner. Was a big part of the Hoops’ late flourish.
