Celtic have been dragged into the conversation around MLS coaches again after the disastrous spell of Wilfried Nancy.

The Frenchman lasted just eight games, losing six of them, having been brought to Glasgow from Columbus Crew after a push by Paul Tisdale.

His damning Celtic spell was detrimental to the reputation of MLS… and has now been compounded by Eric Ramsay’s ill-fated spell at West Brom.

The 34-year-old Englishman has been sacked after just nine matches at West Brom, having been brought in from Minnesota United in the Sttes.

Alan Brazil and Charlie Austin on Wilfried Nancy and Eric Ramsay

Reacting to Ramsay’s premature sacking at The Hawthorns, Charlie Austin said on talkSPORT: β€œWest Brom and Leicester are down there, it’s quite shocking… When you look at that appointment [of Ramsay], that was wrong.

β€œIt doesn’t matter how you look at it, the pedigree wasn’t there, to go to a club like West Brom, go to the Championship… it really wasn’t.

β€œThey keep rolling the dice. It’s a gamble they’ve taken, and unfortunately, that they’re going to pay the price for.”

Alan Brazil said: β€œCharlie, I said earlier: why are we getting these American coaches? What is going on? It’s like them coming over here for a baseball coach! Get lost!”

Austin replied: β€œI think people have watched Ted Lasso and got carried away, if I’m honest!

β€œBut in all seriousness, I don’t get it. For a club like Celtic, what they’ve done with Wilfried Nancy… it’s painful.

β€œI know [Ally McCoist] doesn’t mind that one, but it’s painful, let’s be honest. That appointment that Celtic made could cost them the title up there.

β€œThe West Brom one could cost them Championship football. They could be going to League One.”

In an eerily similar sequence of events to Nancy’s in Glasgow, Ramsay’s football was criticised as he failed to win any of his nine matches in charge of the Baggies.

Was John Barnes the worst manager you have seen at Celtic?

Wilfried Nancy’s short Celtic spell

Nancy’s start to life at Celtic was daunting on paper – and in the end, the worst-case scenario was exactly what played out.

After O’Neill’s run of wins in his interim spell, Nancy lost 2-1 to Hearts, 3-0 to Roma and 3-1 to St Mirren in his first week.

This was bruising enough, and after a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United, fans were already calling for him to be sacked.

Wins over Aberdeen and Livingston weathered the storm and showed better signs on the pitch – but in a crucial week of games against Motherwell and Rangers, two more defeats sealed Nancy’s fate.
