Celtic missed out on managers recently appointed in two European leagues by waiting on Eddie Howe, Scottish Daily Mail journalist Stephen McGowan has told Graham Spiers’ Press Box podcast.

In an episode exploring the details of the failed move for Howe, McGowan said that Celtic had spoken to both Enzo Maresca, now at recently relegated side Parma, and Jose Bordalas, recently appointed at Valencia.

Celtic confirmed they had been waiting on appointing Howe in a statement on the official website earlier today.

McGowan told Press Box: “Enzo Maresca was a very impressive candidate, he was interviewed for the job but he took over at Parma on Thursday.

“Again, that’s one of the consequences of waiting as long as this. Names who may have been in the frame have disappeared.

“They spoke to the coach of Getafe who has joined Valencia now. There were all these kind of names thrown in.

“Really you are talking about going back to square one. Effectively if we’re sitting tonight with a pin and a list of names, you have as much chance of coming up with the next Celtic manager as anyone.”

Celtic also claim to be in advanced discussions with an alternative to Howe, so it’s not as if the club are scrambling around for an alternative the way they tell it. But there is apparently zero indication of who that might be.

Whoever it is has to be appealing to the Celtic support, right for the job and available all at once. That’s a tough ask. Apparently we’ve missed out on two potential appointments by putting misplaced faith in Howe.

Celtic are due back to pre-season training in just a few weeks with competitive matches kicking off in mid-July.

If something isn’t announced by this time next week there will be even more serious questions to answer.
