Perhaps the biggest story which is currently in Scottish football at the moment surrounds not Celtic for once, but Aberdeen.
The Pittodrie side’s game against St Johnstone on Saturday was cancelled, and they received, as reported by the BBC, heavy criticism from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon after a number of players were found to have broken rules by attending a bar following the recent loss to Rangers.
Aberdeen will now have eight players unavailable for next Saturday’s game against Celtic. It is fair to say that Neil Lennon had some opinions on the matter. He implored his players not to fall into the trap that the Aberdeen players did.
“The way it has to be”
“We’ve told our players and staff that, from now on, it’s training ground, home and games – and that’s the way it has to be. We’ve come so far, and everyone has worked so hard behind the scenes – the medical people and government people – to get the game up and running” Lennon said, as quoted by the Herald.
It is vitally important that the Celtic players take note of what Lennon has said. The Hoops don’t want to get into a situation where games are postponed due to the recklessness of the players.
Club seem to taking a hard line
It seems that the club are already taking a hard line to ensure that an Aberdeen situation doesn’t happen.
The Daily Record reported on Saturday that Leigh Griffiths was warned by the club after holding a birthday party at his house.
That is a situation that can’t be repeated by the player. Hopefully he listens to what the club has had to say. If he doesn’t, then it will be interesting to see Celtic’s response.
As Lennon said, everyone has worked very hard in Scottish football to ensure that the season started on time.
If there are any more games postponed then it could be difficult to get the season concluded on time. To make sure that happens players must be careful and not break the rules.
