Celtic star Callum McGregor outshines £62m-rated England midfielder

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor delivered an incredibly impressive performance for Scotland up against a star-studded England team this evening.

Scotland picked up a creditable 0-0 result against England at Wembley, giving themselves a chance of escaping Group D.

A win against Croatia on Tuesday should see them through to the next round of the major tournament.

McGregor, and teammate Billy Gilmour, were imperious in the middle of the park up against the much-hyped Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice.

The CIES Football Observatory reckons West Ham United player Rice is worth around £62m in the current transfer market, converted from €72m.

Callum McGregor must stay in Scotland team

McGregor’s performance tonight not only demonstrates his ability but just how undervalued some players are in the Scottish Premiership.

As my colleague Euan Davidson wrote ahead of tonight’s fixture, Steve Clarke absolutely had to name McGregor in tonight’s team. He didn’t disappoint.

It’d be magic to see the same midfield of McGregor, Gilmour and John McGinn on the pitch against Croatia. With those three, and talents like Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney, anything is possible on Tuesday night.

Ultimately, it’s also a great sign that McGregor can be an impressive performance again for Celtic next season.

These supporters have taken to social media tonight to share their plaudits for the Bhoys midfielder…
