Celtic star Kasper Schmeichel shares what happens when he meets Rangers fans in Glasgow

Kasper Schmeichel is getting used to life as a Celtic player.

From being on Manchester City’s books as a youngster to winning the Premier League title at Leicester City, as well as recently playing in France and Belgium, he has done it all in his career.

But Schmeichel wouldn’t have played at a club the size of Celtic, so all of this, even at the age of 38, is new to him.

In world football, you will go a long way to find a more fierce rivalry than the Glasgow derby because it is one of the best.

But what has life been like in Glasgow for Celtic’s new number one and how does he interact with Rangers fans when he meets them in the city?

Kasper Schmeichel says Rangers fans are ‘respectful’ towards him

Schmeichel has experienced two Glasgow derbies, and to nobody’s surprise, they both ended in wins, including Celtic beating Rangers in the League Cup final last week.

That has made the Denmark star ever more popular with the Celtic supporters, but he shared that ‘everyone has welcomed me’ in the city of Glasgow, even those in Rangers colours, as he told the Fozcast.

Schmeichel admitted that Rangers supporters ‘haven’t necessarily been nice’ when he has met them, but there is an element of respect there.

“It’s a great place,” said Schmeichel about Glasgow. “I have been so positively surprised maybe to say, but it’s really a great place to live. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. People are nice.

“Everyone has welcomed me. Even when I have met Rangers fans, they haven’t necessarily been nice, but they have always been respectful. They have had a bit of banter and that. That’s a great way of doing it. I have really enjoyed it and am enjoying it.

On walking around Glasgow: “People are quite respectful. I rarely go out without my cap or hood up, or something. But generally, it has been alright. I haven’t, touchwood, experienced anything like crazy yet. It’s not too bad.”

Schmeichel’s stats since joining Celtic

Joe Hart was a popular man at Celtic, but his call to hang up the gloves in the summer surprised people and it left a huge void to fill.

But Schmeichel has done very well in his opening six or so months as a Celtic player and already has a trophy to his name.
