Giorgos Giakoumakis has declared “I told you so!” after receiving flak for his comments about Celtic being the best team in Scotland back in February.

Giakoumakis declared his belief that the Bhoys would win the title after beating Dundee at Celtic Park, which came a few weeks after Rangers were demolished 3-0 at the same venue.

It provoked an absurd reaction, in the immediate aftermath and even weeks later when Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack labelled the comments ‘disrespectful’.

Giakoumakis has shown up all his detractors again though, with triumphant new quotes.

Giorgos Giakoumakis didn’t say anything wrong

Speaking to The Glasgow Times, he said this weekend: “I have been proved correct – thank God!

“I just said we would be champions because I felt we were the best team and playing the best football. It was about believing in my team and nothing else. I was being honest. I wasn’t trying to pick a fight with anyone – it was what I believed.

“Could I say I told you so? Exactly! We won the title so it was the truth.

“It wasn’t something we did not expect, to be honest. We worked hard every single day from the first to the last and tried to improve ourselves in every training session and game.”

Giakoumakis has the confidence to be proud of himself and his teammates and that’s fine with me. Some may consider his comments in February as boastful, but for me, that’s the kind of self-assuredness you need to be a winner.

Ultimately Ange Postecoglou kept all of his players on a day-to-day mentality that nobody waivered from. As long as they set about their work in that manner, it never really mattered what was said in publicly.

Ultimately, the Greek striker has been proved correct and become a cult hero with supporters along the way.
