Celtic struck by another defensive injury blow; major doubts for derby

Celtic defender Maik Nawrocki has suffered a hamstring injury and is a major doubt for the upcoming trip to Ibrox on September 3rd.

The Scottish Sun reports Nawrocki felt a hamstring complaint in the closing stages of Sunday’s defeat to Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup.

He’s now facing a few weeks on the sidelines and will be left out of this weekend’s match at home to St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

The report states that the Polish U21 international will also be a major doubt for the subsequent visit to play Rangers a week later, leaving Brendan Rodgers with something of a defensive crisis on his hands.

Centre-backs Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh are also currently out injured. Welsh is missing for a number of months and Carter-Vickers is being assessed after a hamstring issue of his own.

The Scottish Sun reports that it doesn’t look as if the USA international will play at Ibrox either, as Celtic wait on an exact timeframe for his return.

Until we hear more from the manager, it’s hard to know exactly who is and isn’t looking likely to feature in that massive derby clash. But the situation is far from ideal and the reports are naturally concerning for fans.

Liam Scales now looks set to be drafted into defensive duty at the weekend – and possibly even for the trip to Govan at the start of next month. Some will point to the club’s lack of depth – but three injuries in one position is quite extreme and it’s fairer to chalk it up to bad luck.

It hasn’t been a good few days for the Bhoys but hopefully the club are going through the necessary work to cheer everyone up with some big signings over the next couple of weeks. That, coupled with a few key wins, will leave fans feeling better.

The best of luck to Cameron and Maik with their recoveries. Everyone’s fingers are crossed for you!
