Celtic target Alfie Doughty is the subject of a bid from Stoke City, according to reports.

Sky Sports News man Anthony Joseph – ever reliable on the Celtic front – claimed in the last hour that the Charlton winger had been bid for by Stoke City.

Doughty, 21, has impressed scouts across the UK with his speed and end product. The Bhoys had been a rumoured suitor for a long time now, with Addicks chairman Thomas Sandgaard uncertain of being able to keep the youngster (The Athletic).

Doughty made 29 Championship appearances for Charlton Athletic last season. In those games, he scored twice and laid on 3 assists from the left flank (Transfermarkt).

Celtic have already had bids rejected for the young English wide man.

Celtic have to act fast to avoid disappointment

The Bhoys could certainly use reinforcements on the left-hand side. Diego Laxalt and Greg Taylor are duking it out for the left-back position, with the Uruguayan on loan.

Similarly, loanee Elyounoussi is the recognised left winger when Celtic use a wider formation. Mikey Johnston has missed much of the season through injury.

According to Nick Miller of the Athletic, Doughty is an exciting prospect:

“Although initially a full-back, it was not long before he moved further forwards, playing as a wing-back and eventually a winger, on either flank.

“Pace is the first thing you notice about Doughty. Remarkable pace. Relentless pace. The sort of pace that makes defenders cower and do very silly things indeed.

Compared to Gareth Bale by his assistant manager at Charlton, the former Bromley man is a hotly-tipped prospect. With Celtic offering European football and the chance to compete for silverware, Celtic must act fast.

With Stoke City prowling, we’ll surely see a bid from the Bhoys imminently. This one’s worth keeping an eye on.
