Young Celtic defender Lee O’Connor has been named in Stephen Kenny’s latest Republic of Ireland squad for upcoming June internationals against Andorra and Hungary.

The announcement was made this lunchtime.

O’Connor previously won a cap for his country in November 2019 against New Zealand, but hasn’t been involved since then.

It’s a fine reward for a long, arduous campaign on loan at Tranmere Rovers in English League Two.

The 20-year-old has featured for them heavily this season, making 41 appearances in all competitions, but missed out on promotion via the play-offs over the weekend.

He’ll now be returning to Celtic in an effort to impress our new manager.

O’Connor has primarily featured on the right-hand side of defence out on loan but also earned a bit of experience as a defensive midfielder and even as a centre-half.

Celtic aren’t exactly blessed with multiple right-back options so there’s a big opportunity for him to stake a claim for a spot in the first-team squad.

It’d be great for him to earn more international experience in these upcoming friendlies. It could also be a good chance for Celtic fans to see his progress, improvement and current ability.

Well done Lee! We’ll be watching!
