Celtic’s domestic prize money for the 2022/23 season could end up in excess of £4.8m if the Bhoys go on to secure a treble of trophies this weekend against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have already been crowned Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup winners and will shoot for the club’s eighth treble in history at Hampden on Saturday.

Based on the current distribution model and an estimate of total SPFL revenue, SPFL Mediawatch, one of the most prominent online observers of the Scottish league and their associated media rights, has tallied together the prize money totals of all 42 clubs across the divisions – with Celtic, of course, coming out on top.

As league winners, it’s said that the Bhoys have banked £3,843,000 in prize money, which is the highest percentage of distribution per SPFL rules. The Scottish League Cup landed around £350,000, while a win in the Scottish Cup would deliver around £609,000 with the vast majority of it already earned.

Domestic prize money, like leagues across Europe, is primarily raised through TV rights deals, although other sponsorship and SPFL initiatives are added on to that.

Although the most earned in Scotland, the total is far below clubs of comparative size around Europe. Celtic’s competition earnings largely come via the UEFA Champions League.

The Bhoys earned over £25m from participation in that tournament alone, even before considering extra attendance revenue, more than five times what’s on offer domestically.

That income, along with incredible season ticket sales, has been the main driver of the club heading towards a record year-end revenue total that should exceed £100m by the end of June 2023.

That kind of money is on the way to the Bhoys again next year, with first place in the Premiership guaranteeing participation in the lucrative Champions League group stages of 2023/24.

Celtic have another opportunity to significantly spend in the transfer market and bolster Postecoglou’s squad for even more improvement over the next 12 months.
