Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been speaking about Cameron Carter-Vickers and he has labelled him an ‘outstanding’ defender.

Ange Postecoglou’s men kept their hopes of a domestic treble well and truly alive on Saturday as they thrashed Hearts 3-0 at Tynecastle Park.

The Bhoys have been breath-taking in terms of their attacking output this season and it’s no surprise that the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate have been grabbing the headlines.

But McGregor has highlighted the defensive players at Celtic and feels that they actually have the ‘hardest job’ in the side.

The skipper spoke to the Daily Record about the challenges of playing in Postecoglou’s system and singled out Carter-Vickers for huge praise.

McGregor hails ‘outstanding’ Carter-Vickers

McGregor says that despite having the most difficult job in Postecoglou’s side, Carter-Vickers makes everything look very simple.

“He’s outstanding,” McGregor said. “He and Carl (Starfelt), to be fair and when Yuki (Kobayashi) came on, he was strong as well.

“I’ve said this plenty of times – in our system the two centre backs have the hardest job because they’ve got to start the play and be involved in everything. On the flip side of that, they are one on one defending all the time.

“So they’ve got to be strong and defend their line, they’ve got to be quick, so it’s a really tough position and when he [Carter-Vickers] plays it he makes it look easy. Let me tell you, it’s not easy.

“It’s the same with big Carl. We understand that gives us a big platform in the game to how we want to play.”

Carter-Vickers has arguably developed into the best central defender in Scotland under Postecoglou’s guidance.

McGregor is spot on in saying that the defenders don’t have an easy job playing in the Australian’s system, but Carter-Vickers oozes class on and off the ball.

The 25-year-old has forged a brilliant partnership with Starfelt too, which can often go unnoticed due to Celtic’s attacking prowess.
