Celtic’s Sunday mission after Saturday Scottish Premiership results

Celtic will be playing St Johnstone to maintain a nine-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Sunday after today’s results across the league.

With just 14 games of the season remaining, we’re getting to the stage of the campaign where every result up and down the country means a little bit more – or at least feels like it does.

So what went down on another frantic day in this football daft nation?

Aberdeen bounce back, Hibs pick up crucial win

In Aberdeen, the Dons gave hope to supporters in the wake of Jim Goodwin’s exit with a solid 3-1 victory over Motherwell. Bojan Miovski was the hero of the day, scoring a second-half double.

Hearts overcame an early scare from Dundee United to earn a 3-1 comeback win at Tynecastle, with Lawrence Shankland, Alex Cochrane and Stephen Humphrys on the scoresheet.

At Almondvale, Livingston were in blistering first-half form, rushing to a three-goal lead at home to Kilmarnock, who could only score a consolation in reply for a 3-1 result.

Rangers, meanwhile, required a fortunate Borna Barisic deflected free-kick to beat Ross County 2-1 at Ibrox. The Staggies had equalised a Malik Tillman opener with a Jordan White effort in the second half.

Lee Johnson’s Hibs also picked up a creditable 1-0 victory away to St Mirren with an Elie Youan goal, easing pressure on their situation.

Celtic know what’s required at St Johnstone

Despite today’s result at Ibrox, it would be false to say there is pressure on the Bhoys, of course. The Celtic squad and coaching staff always insist they don’t take any notice of other results or points differences in the table.

The standards and the mentality of Ange Postecoglou’s group have been proven to be incredibly strong, regardless of context or circumstances. I doubt they’ll care it’s ‘only’ a six-point lead overnight.

Fans, however, undoubtedly do take notice of results. It’d be silly to deny that. Everyone is eager for the nine-point gap to stay constant, or even increase.

St Johnstone won’t make it easy at McDiarmid Park and both managers are expecting a dodgy pitch. But Postecoglou also has a brilliant squad to choose from right now, with very few injury issues. The Bhoys will be red-hot favourites to pick up a victory on Sunday.
