Charlie Mulgrew and Kris Boyd react to suggestion of Derek McInnes becoming Celtic manager

Some interesting names have popped up on Celtic’s managerial search list.

As of this moment, it doesn’t seem as though Celtic are in any rush to bring in a fresh face, given the strong start Martin O’Neill has made.

But whilst the next Celtic manager is being tasked to catch Derek McInnes’ Hearts, who lead the Premiership table by nine points, not many would have expected his name to be mentioned in the Hoops’ search for a new manager.

When McInnes’ name was put on the table, Charlie Mulgrew, Steven Naismith and Kris Boyd made their feelings pretty clear about it.

Could Derek McInnes become Celtic’s next manager?

First of all, McInnes is a former Rangers man, so that in itself shuts down any suggestion of the 54-year-old taking the Celtic gig.

Speaking on the Warm-Up podcast, all three pundits agreed that there is ‘no chance’ of it happening.

Mulgrew: “Someone mentioned Derek McInnes.”

Boyd: “No chance.”

Mulgrew: “And why not?”

Naismith: “I can’t see it.”

Mulgrew: “No chance for me either.”

Charlie Mulgrew winds up Hearts fans further with another title prediction

Celtic have a game in hand on Hearts, but given how O’Neill has lifted the Bhoys, things could become interesting in the coming months if the champions find their winning rhythm again.

Whilst Boyd was in no doubt that it’s ‘realistic’ for Hearts to win the title, Mulgrew made it clear that he still feels that’s ‘unrealistic’, and he doesn’t even think the leaders will finish in the top two.

Mulgrew has done very well to wind up the Hearts supporters this season, and he’s doing it again with his latest comments.

Naismith: “Has your mind changed from weeks ago you (Mulgrew) saying, ‘Oh, no chance.’ What is realistic for Hearts this season?”

Boyd: “Win the league.”

Naismith: “Realistic for you.”

Mulgrew: “No, it’s unrealistic for me.”

Naismith: “So, what is realistic? Second?”

Mulgrew: “Second. But I still think they will be third. I think they could push for second. Unrealistic to win the league. Don’t get me wrong, the longer it goes on, the more nervous I am becoming.

“But I am having to double down on what I have said. The big thing during the week was how they came back against St Mirren. Respect.

“Then, the changes they made to their squad depth. I didn’t realise how good their squad depth was. The way Del made the changes, he deserves a lot of credit for that. I question the right-hand side for Hearts.”
