Let’s be honest, it has been chaos at Celtic and Rangers this season.
For a long time now, Celtic have picked up trophy after trophy, and watched Rangers change manager after manager to no avail.
But this season, Celtic joined their rivals, because for the first time in history, both clubs parted ways, for one reason or another, with the man in the dugout, as the supporters demand change in the boardroom.
Rangers supporters got their wish this week because Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart were sacked, but Charlie Mulgrew explained why it’s different to the champions of Scotland.
Poll: Do you have faith in the Celtic board?

Charlie Mulgrew on the Celtic board after Rangers sack Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart
Speaking on Go Radio, Mulgrew stated that the Celtic Park faithful would have seen what had happened with the double Rangers sackings.
But Mulgrew dropped a few truth bombs, when reacting to the suggestion whether change at Ibrox could affect or push the Celtic board to change, by stating that it’s not the same thing because the two clubs have had ‘different levels of success in the last 25 years.’
The former Hoops defender admitted that Celtic need to be ‘united’, and the recent fiasco of the AGM helped nobody.
“The fans will certainly look at what’s happened at Rangers and wonder, although they will focus on their own club, and what’s going to happen at Celtic,” Mulgrew told Go Radio.
“I don’t think it’s the same thing. I don’t think that if it necessarily happens at Rangers, it will happen at Celtic. They are two completely different businesses and different set-ups. Different levels of success in the last 25 years.
“But there is no doubt about it. I don’t know how they do it. But there needs to be a connection right through the club.
“Like we have seen in the past, when Brendan Rodgers came after Ronny Deila and the connection right through. You see the success it can bring. I think it needs to get back to that.
“How does that happen? I don’t know. It’s not changing quickly. Something needs to happen between the board and the fans. Everybody needs to get united. It’s just dragging on far too long now.
“I don’t know how it gets better. To help the most important thing, which is the team on the pitch. To win leagues and be successful. It’s not going to help the situation, so being united certainly will help.”
Poll: Will Celtic win the league?
Celtic and Rangers’ trophy haul since 2000
It’s apt that Martin O’Neill is in charge now, and trying to get Celtic back on top of the Premiership table, because he was the one to start this dominant period on top of a dominant period.
No team in Scottish football has eaten up so many trophies over such a period as Celtic, and you question if anyone else ever will.
And the trophy hauls since the turn of the century, when O’Neill first walked through the door, prove it:
- Celtic’s trophies since 2000/01: 42
- Rangers trophies since 2000/01: 18
