Charlie Mulgrew reveals his earliest Scottish Cup memory as he backs Celtic to complete Treble feat

Charlie Mulgrew has lived the dream that so many Celtic fans wish to do.

Having been a huge part of the Neil Lennon years, Mulgrew was a rock at the back as he helped his boyhood club win a number of accolades.

Mulgrew won seven trophies in his second spell across six years at Celtic Park, including two Scottish Cups.

With the Bhoys facing Aberdeen in the final this weekend, the 39-year-old will be transported back to one of his earliest memories as a child.

Charlie Mulgrew recalls Celtic’s 1995 Scottish Cup final win

The 90’s is a period of Celtic history that leaves supporters with shivers down their spine.

It was a period where the Bhoys will admit they were second-best in Glasgow, but there was still some success.

After a six-year trophy drought, Pierre van Hooijdonk’s header against Airdrie was enough to win the Scottish Cup final.

That was the first recollection of success for Mulgrew and a moment he will never forget.

“I grew up in the 90s and the first trophy I remember was watching Pierre score at Hampden in 1995 against Airdrie,” he told the Daily Record.

“I was living in Canada at the time and we watched it in a pub. At that time Rangers were dominating and you get to the final, it was a tight game and Pierre scored a header.

“Trophies were few and far between back then, never mind Trebles. So I don’t ever take these times for granted.”

Mulgrew says it’s ‘hard to look past’ Celtic for Scottish Cup final

There’s only one team heading to Hampden Park with any sort of form this weekend.

Aberdeen have had a horrible end to the season and are still licking the wounds of a 5-1 hammering at Pittodrie to Celtic just a matter of weeks ago.

It’s no surprise that Bhoys are the overwhelming favourites and Mulgrew thinks the Treble will be theirs.

He continued: “It’s hard to see past them. Aberdeen have lost their last four games, albeit it’s a cup final and they know they need to sort of save their season with a result.

“You would imagine their fans will show up and be demanding of them. But I don’t see an angle where you can put a fight up for Aberdeen to get a win.

“Even if they start well and get a lead or whatever, you just imagine Brendan will be able to do enough to get Celtic over the line and lift the trophy.”
