Celtic’s ned for a new goalkeeper continues this summer as the club seems no closer to finding a successor to Joe Hart.

Sure there has been plenty of speculation since the former Celtic hero announced he was hanging up his gloves at the end of last season.

We discussed yesterday how Celtic have been linked with no less than 20 goalkeepers since Hart retired as speculation remains rampant on who will next pull on the number one jersey.

And whilst the new season kick-off nears, former Celtic defender, Charlie Mulgrew, has issued a warning to the fans on why he thinks they must remain patient and allow the club to take their time in finding their new number one.

Mulgrew’s Barkas warning

Celtic signed Vasilis Barkas for £4.5m to help steer the club towards a record-breaking ten-in-a-row.

Every Celtic fan knows what happened after he joined the club and Mulgrew has cited Barkas’ purchase as a reason for the supporters to remain calm.

Mulgrew said [Superscoreboard], “I’m not surprised it’s not happened now because you can’t rush these decisions. You saw Barkas a few years ago. It didn’t work out.

“It’s nobody’s fault. Sometimes you don’t settle. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s flying now and he’s playing well and he’s a good goalkeeper.

“He just never settled what it wasn’t meant for him. It’s really hard to rush these decisions and make them quickly. You have to take your time and make sure to do the background checks.

“I’m sure there will be other clubs that are interested in these goalkeepers. You probably need to wait till later on to get agents and clubs waiting for more money or looking for bigger moves. There’s more to it than just going out and grabbing a player and bringing them in.

“The same fans would be right on the keeper’s back if he was terrible, even though he was signed early.

”Of course, fans want players in the door, they want a goalkeeper in the door, they want a number one, but I think as a club you need to be patient and make sure you get the decision right.”

Joe Hart is the perfect example of what getting a good and established goalkeeper can do to help drive a club to success.

Yes, the former Celtic hero had his faults but no one can deny that despite those, his three years at Celtic were an absolute success.

Winning seven trophies out of nine trophies, Hart had his best-ever season at the club last season after being named the Celtic Supporters Association’s Player of the Year.

Hart leaves Celtic a treble-winning legend as the former England number one’s performances, leadership and connection with the club and the fans will always be remembered fondly by the Parkhead support.
