Charlie Mulgrew states the brutal ‘truth’ about Celtic and Aberdeen players after 6-0 win

Celtic eased through to the Scottish League Cup final on Saturday after thrashing Aberdeen at Hampden.

Daizen Maeda’s hat-trick stole the headlines, with Cameron Carter-Vickers opening the scoring, Kyogo Furuhashi netting again in a big game and Nicolas Kuhn perhaps scoring the pick of the bunch.

It wasn’t so long ago that Aberdeen came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Celtic and that result made a few people stand up.

On top of that, Jimmy Thelin’s side have kept up with Celtic’s pace in the Premiership, so neutrals were expecting a closely fought encounter at Hampden and perhaps an upset.

But Brendan Rodgers’ side didn’t just book their final ticket, they dismissed the opposition like they are a struggling Premiership side.

For Celtic to put six goals past the second-best team in Scotland just goes to show the gap between the two and what is probably coming in the league during these coming months.

Charlie Mulgrew put that forward in the most brutally honest way possible.

Aberdeen ‘player for player’ are nowhere near Celtic

It needs to be noted that Aberdeen aren’t playing in Europe, so that lack of midweek fixtures is helping them.

And then, it just so happened to be that when they do play for a third time in a week, they are dismissed by Celtic in such a dominant fashion.

Mulgrew made it clear that ‘the truth’ is that ‘every Celtic player’ is better physically and technically than the Aberdeen players, as he told Premier Sports (02/11/24 at 7:35 pm).

The former centre-back thinks the Dons were ‘shown up’ by the champions of Scotland and it proves the gulf between the two sides.

“The truth is if you go through player for player, then every Celtic player is better physically and technically than the Aberdeen players, that’s the facts,” said Mulgrew.

“Aberdeen have been unbelievable this year. The manager has done an unbelievable job and I hope they go on to continue it. They take it to the end of the season and it’s brilliant for Scottish football.

“But they have been shown up how good they really are, in terms of individually and as a team.”

Celtic’s upcoming fixtures

You sense, this is now Celtic’s chance to pull away and prove to the rest why they are going to become champions again.

Yes, the Bhoys have Champions League matters to deal with, but it won’t be too long before they are making a gap between themselves and the second-best side in Scotland.

As you saw at the weekend, Celtic can afford to have the quality of Adam Idah, Greg Taylor and Paulo Bernardo on the bench, yet win without needing them.

And you sense, the likes of Liam Scales will be brought back into the Celtic side in these coming weeks, especially with huge European fixtures on top of Premiership matches.
