Chris Sutton’s title verdict and whether Aberdeen can really challenge Celtic after beating Rangers

Last night’s results in the Scottish Premiership have seen the league table now start to take shape after Celtic beat Dundee and Aberdeen defeated Rangers.

Dundee came to Celtic Park with a clear gameplan of trying to shut up shop for as long as they could. I mean, who can blame them?

The last time Tony Docherty brought his team to Paradise it turned into hell as Celtic beat Dundee 7-1 after seven different goalscorers put the game out of sight in the first hour of the match.

But after the Hoops sealed the win and Aberdeen beat Rangers at Pittodrie, Celtic hero Chris Sutton delivered his title verdict and whether The Dons are credible title challengers to Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys.

Aberdeen are now challenging Celtic for the title after beating Rangers

Sutton was on commentary duty up north and was blown away by Jimmy Thelin’s side as they took care of third-placed Rangers.

Sutton told Sky Sports Scotland, “They [Aberdeen] are in a title race. Based on what? Based on performances and based on points. Do we all think Celtic have a stronger squad? Absolutely, they do.

“I still think Celtic will win it. But you can’t take anything away from Aberdeen. And just the sheer guts, I mean, honestly what a storm they weathered.

“Rangers, fair play to them, coming out after the break and then all of a sudden Aberdeen just go again.

“And I know there was a header at the end, but they saw it out pretty comfortably. But I don’t know how they keep digging so deep.

“That’s a testament to the bench which came on. He utilises subs really well and the manager, they have this belief. I’ve not heard it like this many times as a player and as a pundit.

“I’ve never heard it loud like this, which is brilliant to see that connection between the team and the fans.”

There is still a lot to play for and nothing can or will be taken for granted by Celtic or the fans but there is no doubt that the games between all three will be pivotal in the race for the league title this season.

Celtic now look forward to facing Aberdeen in the League Cup on Saturday where Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to get his hands on the only piece of silverware that eluded him last season.
