Chris Sutton aims a subtle dig at Celtic board after Bodo Glimt secure Champions League play-offs

This time last season, Celtic had already booked their Champions League play-off ticket, and they were preparing for two mouthwatering games against Bayern Munich.

Fast forward, and Celtic have had three different men in the dugout since then, are now fighting to stay in the Europa League and are sitting in third place in the Premiership table.

To say it has been an embarrassing decline would be an understatement because lots of things have gone wrong, but there are many clubs across Europe showing the champions of Scotland how it’s done.

One of them is Norwegian high-flyer FK Bodø/Glimt. Their manager, Kjetil Knutsen, has been linked to the Celtic job, and many backing the famous green and white colours want him in the Parkhead dugout.

The first thing I would do if I was on the Celtic board is – – – –

Celtic hero Chris Sutton praises Bodo Glimt’s model

Bodo Glimt headed into the final league phase matches sitting in the elimination zone and needing a win away at Atlético Madrid to progress.

To the Norwegian side’s credit, even though Alexander Sorloth opened the scoring after 15 minutes, they came back from behind to secure all three points, and it certainly impressed Sutton on social media.

“Well played, Bodo Glimt,” said Sutton. “Great ambition from a so-called unfashionable club with a team full of homegrown Norwegians.

“That’s a structure, that’s a model.”

A clear message to the Celtic board

Celtic are stuck in the dark ages, from top to bottom, the club needs refreshing, moving forward, and modernising.

Several Celtic supporters reacted to Sutton’s post, and many hit the nail on the head about the club’s current situation.

One supporter, @EricMcBride4, stated: ‘Their manager, rightly, gets a lot of praise, but their successes must be as a result of much more than just him. The whole operation must surely be a great example of how a successful club is run.’

And @KevinCairns60 added: ‘…and then there’s Celtic FC. No structure, no model.’

@jayThomaon sent out a passionate response: ‘@CelticFC this is the standard, this is what we want to be proud of, not this current lack of ambition, lack of confidence, lack of leadership we are experiencing. You say you are Celtic men, with the club’s interest at heart, show us this then.’

Whatever happens this season, whether Celtic lift several trophies or nothing at all. There needs to be a clear-out from top to bottom in the summer.
