Chris Sutton delivers emphatic response to Philippe Clement’s bizarre comments on Celtic resources

Chris Sutton is never too far away from any Celtic-related topic and never stops short of offering his opinion regarding his former side.

Fortunately, Brendan Rodgers has guided the Bhoys to a near-flawless run this campaign across all competitions. Barring defeats against Borussia Dortmund and their arch-rivals last week, there hasn’t been much to complain about in the city’s east end.

The same cannot be said for Philippe Clement amid his comments on Celtic’s financial advantage over Rangers in the lead-up to his side dropping points away to Dundee during the week.

Nothing seems to be going right for the Belgian at the moment, and there is plenty of dissatisfaction from his own support surrounding the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

However, instead of focusing on matters closer to home, Clement has made excuses for failing to compete with Celtic more often than now. Unsurprisingly, he appears to be on the brink of losing his job, which has captured the attention of Chris Sutton.

Chris Sutton responds to Philippe Clement’s Celtic finances quip

Writing in his Daily Record column, Sutton has fired shots at Clement after his ridiculous comments on Celtic’s financial situation, rightly pointing out that the points gap in the table is due to the Belgian’s inability to defeat teams on a fraction of his side’s budget, rather than anything to do with the Bhoys.

He stated: “The Belgian waffle is getting worse every week. It’s excuse after laughable excuse. Clement had the brass neck to talk about injury problems the other night when Dundee had 10 players out – including arguably their best player in Lyall Cameron.

“Tony Docherty had two goalkeepers on his bench and others who had school the next day. Clement had some cheek and his sly digs at Celtic’s budget are another joke.

“He can’t moan about Celtic’s resources when he can’t get results against teams who have a fraction of the money he has.”

Later, he added: “Is Clement still in position because Rangers can’t afford to sack him? At what point do they get to the conclusion they can’t afford to keep him? Celtic are strong right now, on and off the pitch, but that’s nothing to do with not being able to deal with the rest.”

Brendan Rodgers won’t take any notice of external noise

Excuses from elsewhere won’t concern Rodgers and why should they? Celtic are top of the table on merit, their consistency this season has been remarkable.

Of course, twists and turns may exist as the season progresses. The Bhoys were beaten at Ibrox last week, and there was a collective realisation from the camp that they simply weren’t good enough on the day.

Now, the challenge will be to continue that run. Celtic are on the right track, but it means next to nothing if it isn’t solidified in the second half of the campaign.
