Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic future still hangs in the balance this summer.

The Celtic manager has been very coy on his Parkhead future as Rodgers confirmed at the beginning of August that no further talks have taken place.

Many Celtic fans will be keen to see Rodgers stay at the club after delivering domestic and European success over the last two seasons.

However, with no further update, Chris Sutton delivers a timeline on when Celtic fans will know if Rodgers will decide to extend his stay in Glasgow’s east end beyond next summer.

Chris Sutton says Rodgers will make Celtic future decision ‘at the end of the transfer window’

Celtic’s transfer business has been much discussed this summer. Fans are frustrated at the lack of real activity despite the vast financial resources available to the Hoops boss.

And Sutton believes that Rodgers will make his decision when the transfer window closes this summer on Monday, 1st September at 7pm.

Sutton told the Record Celtic podcast [31m 30s], “I think we will know at the end of this transfer window if Brendan’s staying.

“It’s beyond the Champions League. It’s whether he feels that he can progress the club and if he feels he has the players in.

“Because nobody knows, if they do get in the Champions League, then things don’t go well, they play some really tough teams or whatever get on the wrong side of a few decisions, this, that, and the other.

“Then if he feels he still has the quality there, the quality players there who can progress, then I think he will stay.

“But I think we’ll find out in the next few weeks with who comes in.”

What Rodgers has said about his Celtic future

Rodgers spoke on Sky Sports last week on whether he thinks he will stay at Celtic beyond next summer.

The Celtic manager said, “There’s no further (contract) update no, and for the sake of honesty and clarity I can tell you exactly where we’re at.

“So I said when I came here first that I’d do three years minimum. People had me out the door at the end of last season or going various places.

“I said then and I’ll say it now – there’s nowhere to go. I love being here. I’ve done two years. I’ve got one more year to go.

“Dermot (Desmond) and Michael (Nicholson) and I had a conversation over the summer on where we were at and where it sits with myself and everything else and I said I’m very happy here.

“There’s conditions we want in to be able to improve and be better because I’m not the type of manager that’s good at maintaining anything.

“If it’s just something to maintain, I’m not the manager for Celtic. It’ll be someone else. But to build and grow and develop and push, then of course I love being at Celtic.”

So it seems that it’s crystal clear for Celtic. Give Rodgers the tools to progress the club and he will stay. If not, then he walks next summer.

Why is this simple decision now turning into a long-drawn-out-process?
