It has been a difficult road for Matt O’Riley since he left Celtic for Brighton in the summer.

The 23-year-old departed the trophy-winning machine in Scotland to further enhance his career in the riches of the Premier League.

But as O’Riley entered the picture at the Amex Stadium, he was hobbling off it with a worrying injury, so he had to be patient to make his Premier League debut.

And what a debut it was!

Even the Celtic fans were cheering on with delight when O’Riley took a brilliant touch, was through on goal and then slotted the ball past Ederson to help Brighton inflict a fourth consecutive defeat on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

As you can imagine, the plaudits are coming left, right and centre for O’Riley and Brighton have a new hero.

Chris Sutton would have seen the technician flourish into an outstanding midfielder at Parkhead, especially under Brendan Rodgers’ stewardship.

And the former striker perhaps had the best reaction to O’Riley’s winning goal.

The Scottish Premiership takes verbal beatings in England, for its lack of quality, competition and, well, everything else.

Yes, Celtic dominates Scotland’s top tier, but Manchester City do the same in England, winning four in a row.

And Sutton was quick to brand the English Premier League as the ‘Farmer’s League’ when expressing his delight at O’Riley’s winning goal on BBC Radio Five Live’s 606.

“Absolutely delighted for Matt O’Riley coming down to the Farmer’s League north of the border and scoring the winner for Brighton,” said Sutton.

It’s amazing how fortunes can change for an individual because that has happened with Brighton’s new hero.

O’Riley got injured on his Brighton debut against Crawley in the EFL Cup and was out of action for several months.

Yet, fast forward to the present and O’RIley scored the winner for Brighton against Manchester City. It’s a goal these Brighton fans will remember for a long time.

But the trophy-winning Celtic star had quite an apt reaction to his Premier League debut, as he posted on Instagram.

“Missed playing football,” wrote the attacking midfielder.
