Chris Sutton verbally slapped Kris Boyd after he criticised Celtic’s potential January transfer plans.
After Brendan Rodgers’ side were knocked out of Europe, and that in a pretty poor fashion, talk turned to the quality of the Celtic squad.
Many pointed towards more investment needed if Celtic are to compete with Europe’s elite after another season of failure in the Champions League.
But Kris Boyd was seemingly baffled by why Celtic would want to spend in January if the team is already dominating on the domestic circuit, as well as the former striker taking shots at Chris Sutton for not criticising the club’s recruitment from the summer.
All of that nonsense was quickly shut down by the former Bhoys star who told his fellow colleague that ‘you didn’t half waffle some nonsense’ and that he is a ‘fool’, as he told Sky Sports Football (03/12/23 at 11:05 am).
Just because you are sitting at the top, it doesn’t mean you still don’t look to improve and it seems as though it’s something Kris Boyd struggles to understand.
Well, given that it has been well over a decade since Rangers even won more than a few trophies in a single season, then it’s probably understandable why those comments are being made.
But thankfully, Chris Sutton was on hand to put Kris Boyd in his place before Celtic could secure all three points against St Johnstone on Sunday.
Celtic’s transfer plans
“You didn’t half waffle some nonsense there,” responded Sutton to Boyd’s claims.
“Why would Celtic want to build in January,” the legendary striker repeated. “That’s a really strange comment. Why wouldn’t they want to get better, Kris?!
“Brendan Rodgers is basically saying ‘this squad isn’t good enough’.”
Boyd stated: “He (Rodgers) said the same in the summer, why didn’t they do it in the summer?”
Sutton responded: “You make a very valid point. That was the biggest issue, in terms of Champions League football, Celtic weren’t ready and you are spot on there.”
Sutton then responded to Boyd saying he ‘hasn’t criticised’ Celtic’s spending in the summer and how the club got it wrong:
“Well, hang on a minute, I just criticised it for the last three or four minutes. You are talking absolute nonsense. It’s an amazing concept that you don’t understand a manager wants to sign players in January to get better. That was the past you fool.”

Will the Celtic board back Brendan Rodgers?
The manager himself has spoken about needing more quality, especially if the team is to compete in the Champions League.
The question now remains. Will the Celtic board back Rodgers in January and during the summer transfer window, in order to take the squad to the next level?
Given that those questions are above the club’s head, it is still commendable that the team is still unbeaten in the league and sitting eight points clear at the top.
Rangers can reduce it to five if they win their game in hand, but they also have to deal with facing Celtic at Parkhead at the end of the month.
