Chris Sutton has slated Celtic’s ‘wall of silence’ regarding Martin O’Neill.

O’Neill has reportedly agreed a permanent contract as manager, as of Friday. However, we still await an official announcement from the club, as of Monday morning.

It’s symptomatic of a lack of communication to which we have become used from Celtic in recent years, creating a vacuum to be filled by media uncertainty.

For Sutton, fans who have stumped up for their season tickets already deserve better from their club.

Chris Sutton: ‘Still no real structure’ at Celtic

Sutton said on The Warm-Up: “What is going on at Celtic? I thought it was announced that Martin had signed!

“I thought it was announced, and expecting the club to clarify, and all the noise over the weekend…

“It feels like an eternity, but we’re now more than two weeks since the Scottish Cup final. Celtic winning the double under magic Martin…

“And then this wall of silence.”

He later continued: “It’s about clarity, isn’t it? It’s about making the right decision — I’m not saying that it’s the wrong decision…

“But when you think that Martin came back in January, and Celtic have had January until now to plan, and then you’re thinking: ‘Well, there’s going to be a quick appointment’.

“All of a sudden, there’s been this delay. Why? Was it because Martin wanted time out to think about whether it was going to take its toll on him, if he took the job for another season.

“I get that. But why not give him a couple of days to think about it?

“It’s not just about Martin being the manager. Again, it’s about what’s going to happen in terms of recruitment. Celtic are now behind everybody.

“There’s still no real structure. And let’s get it right: the last two windows that Celtic have had have been an absolute disaster.

“Martin was in in January, but seemed to distance himself from what went on in the January window. So what’s the plan? Who’s signing the players?

“The fans have stumped up money for season tickets once again…”

Celtic’s decision to hire Martin O’Neill permanently

Many feel that O’Neill has earned the right to stay on in his position, but there is a fair bit of a surprise that he has committed to stay this summer.

A major rebuild awaits, as Sutton has said. Any manager would need help given the amount of business to be done.

O’Neill was extremely popular among the Celtic players, with many voicing their support for him staying.

But with many of them expected to move on this summer, the dressing room will have a very different look by the end of this summer’s transfer window.
