Chris Sutton reckons Celtic skipper Scott Brown would have had words with Leigh Griffiths following the forward’s recent fitness lapse.
Just a fortnight ago, Neil Lennon blasted Griffiths for returning to training “out of condition and overweight” (Sky Sports) in a stunning act of frustration played out in the public domain.
Griffiths has since earned some praise from his boss, and he returned to the Celtic side in our friendly win over Hibernian on Monday.
However, that hasn’t stopped Sutton from laying into the former Wolves man on BBC 5 Live.
“I hear that his performance against Hibs the other day was pretty good, and he looked sharp and fit.
“That’s good that he’s reacted but if I was in that Celtic dressing room I would have let him know.
“I’m sure the likes of Scott Brown and other players would have let him know.
“With what’s at stake this season, it’s such a big season.”
We need to move on from Griffiths debacle
The timing of Sutton’s comments are a little strange, given that Griffiths seems to be back in favour at Parkhead.
Of course the Scotland striker let himself down during the break. However, what’s done is done, and we must now move forward with Griffiths as part of our plans.
For all the negativity around his conduct in recent weeks, the Scotland international had clearly put in a lot of hard work over the past fortnight and that is refreshing to see.
He was arguably the biggest player for us between January and March of this year, and will continue to be if he’s fighting fit this season.
As for Scott Brown’s potential involvement. He wouldn’t be a very good captain if he hadn’t said something.
