As Celtic fans, we pride ourselves on having watched some of the best players in the world don the green and white Hoops.

From Jimmy Johnstone, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay and Henrik Larsson the Celtic support has seen some of the greatest players in the game ever grace the Parkhead turf.

Many have gone on to continue their careers elsewhere whilst others have come to Celtic having tasted success at other clubs.

And that was the case for Paul Lambert. The former Celtic captain enjoyed a huge amount of success at Borussia Dortmund before his £2m move to Parkhead in November 1997 and that has led Chris Sutton to name him in his top five of British footballers ever to have played abroad.

Sutton said [It’s All Kicking Off], ‘So the best five British footballers to play abroad. In fifth place, Paul Lambert.

“My old team-mate at Celtic went from Motherwell to Borussia Dortmund and had a major part in Borussia Dortmund winning the Champions League.

“So Paul Lambert at number five.”

Sutton goes on to give his other four players who were Steve McManaman (4th), John Charles (3rd), Gareth Bale (2nd) and Chris Waddle (1st).

After helping Dortmund become the champions of Europe, Lambert’s move to Celtic proved to be a fruitful one.

As well as stopping Rangers’ bid to win ten-in-a-row, Lambert went on to win a further three league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Having helped Celtic to their first treble since the Jock Stein era in 2001, Lambert also captained the side to the UEFA Cup Final in 2003 in Seville.

Lambert will go down in the Celtic history books as one of the legends of the club and it is little wonder Sutton bestowed this latest accolade on the 54-year-old.
