Brendan Rodgers has opened contract negotiations with Liam Scales as the Republic of Ireland international looks set to be rewarded for his fine form this season.

Scales has been a mainstay this season under Rodgers in a season that unravelled an incredible story about the 25-year-old defender.

Having enjoyed a successful loan spell at Aberdeen last season, Scales was quickly tipped to move to the Pittodrie club permanently.

However, a defensive injury crisis at the start of this season saw Scales propelled into the Celtic first-team and he has never let Brendan Rodgers down.

With Scales’ contract expiring at the end of next season, a decision needs to be made on the Irishman and according to the Daily Record, Scales is set to be rewarded for his fine form this season.

The report states, “The Hoops have now opened discussions with the Republic of Ireland international, who is out of contract in the summer of 2025.

“Brendan Rodgers is looking to extend that agreement having been impressed with his fellow Irishman who has gone from the fringes to become a key man for Rodgers’ side this season.”

It is no more than Scales deserves. He has been ‘brilliant‘ in a Hoops back four that is constantly chopping and changing and the defender has never faltered this season.

Rocco Vata contract talks ongoing

Whilst Scales’ contract talks have just begun, the same report from the Daily Record says talks with Rocco Vata are still ongoing.

The 18-year-old winger made it clear at the start of the season that he was targeting first-team football at Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers challenged the youngster to prove that he can step up but up until recently, Vata has played most of his football in the Celtic B team.

Summer transfer speculation made many think that Vata could be on his way out of Celtic but he has forced his way into the matchday squad of late and has made two, albeit brief, appearances in the Hoops in the 5-0 win over Buckie Thistle and the 1-1 draw with Aberdeen earlier this month.

The Celtic fans will be hoping that Vata puts pen to paper as he has shown a lot of potential for growth at the club.
