Chris Sutton on Celtic signings; potentially "staggering" value of new Bhoys

Celtic favourite Chris Sutton has backed Ange Postecoglou’s record in the transfer market, and said that his signings have value both now and in the future.

Sutton, who broke the transfer record in both England and Scotland [Guardian], is impressed by the work being done to strengthen Celtic’s first team.

The Hoops have been shrewd under Postecoglou. In terms of net spend, Celtic have recouped decent fees for players, while using what they’ve earned to make vast improvements. Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard both departed for £13m+, while the likes of Kyogo was £4.5m, Juranovic was £2.5m, and so on.

While Celtic have undoubtedly made some blunders in recent years, Sutton believes that Postecoglou is doing a fine job reinvesting the money the club have received. Not only that, he thinks that the players brought in, specifically Kyogo, Jota and the January window signings, will reap huge dividends.

Sutton told the Record Celtic podcast: “How much is Kyogo worth now? If they get the Jota deal done, how much will he be worth?

“In terms of financial value to the club, the three new Japanese Bhoys coming in, and Maeda, the possibility of £1.3m, £1.6m whatever it is… on the face of it, that looks like it could be staggering value, doesn’t it? So it suits the team on the pitch, but it also suits Celtic’s model financially.”

Chris Sutton is right about new Celtic players’ potential value, but let’s enjoy them first!

Obviously, Sutton is right; it’d be interesting to see how Kyogo is valued now. Ditto Jota, provided Celtic bring him in permanently.

Maeda, in particular, looks like amazing value for the fee that’s been reported. Especially given his J League scoring antics in 2021.

The new Celtic signings appear, for all intents and purposes, like great value. Yes, that includes in the future, when it’s time to rebuild the squad again and make a profit. It’s no secret that Celtic have enjoyed making a significant mark-up on unearthed talents.

But the main thing is, obviously, how they get on during the course of their time at Celtic. Let’s not put any expectations on them yet.

On the face of it, Ange Postecoglou and Michael Nicholson have played a blinder.

But there are so many variables. So many things to take account of. The most important thing is what Sutton says about what they can do on the pitch.

These are exciting times for Celtic. Let’s make sure we aren’t too worried about sell-on value just yet!
