Chris Sutton says Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has signed a player with ‘question mark’ over his head

Celtic fans are delighted that Kieran Tierney has returned to the club.

Tierney signed a five-year deal after leaving Arsenal following the end of his contract there, and he will once again link up with Brendan Rodgers.

Simon Donnelly thinks it is already the ‘signing of the summer’ for Celtic with more than two months of the window to go.

While BBC pundit Michael Stewart told Sportsound that Tierney is an ‘absolute colossus’ of a signing for the Hoops.

Sutton reminder over Tierney’s poor injury record

Chris Sutton agrees Tierney’s quality is a big boost for Celtic. However, the Daily Record columnist has doubts over the Scotland international’s injury history.

Tierney is prone to a long-term injury and Sutton is adamant that the Bhoys need to sign a strong backup in the event KT is sidelined.

Sutton wrote: “The return of Tierney is a major boost. Listen, we know he’s had injury issues and that is going to be a question mark.

“But there is absolutely no doubting his quality. If he stays fit he’ll be a brilliant signing, it’s as simple as that.

“There is a need for a strong back up though, just going on recent evidence. Tierney isn’t going to play every minute of a 55 game season. He’s just not.

“That means there needs to be a more than capable left back on the books to slot in some weeks or come off the bench.

“Greg Taylor would have been ideal but it looks like that ship has sailed, so Celtic need to address it.”

Tierney’s injury history detailed

Tierney has been extremely unlucky over the years, and the data proves a fair chunk of his career has been sadly on the treatment table.

His most recent long-term injury was his worst to date, sustained during Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign last summer.

That was his hamstring, which he has had problems with repeatedly since October 2023. It’s been the same for his knee and hip.
