Celtic defender Christopher Jullien has left a heartfelt message for Neil Lennon.

Jullien, brought to Celtic in 2019 by the former Celtic manager, was colossal in his first season at Celtic. Under Lennon, the Frenchman scored vital goals in big matches, including against Rangers and Lazio.

At £7m, Jullien was an expensive outlay for Lennon and Celtic [BBC]. Broadly speaking, he’s returned every penny and more on that investment, and has been sorely missed as Celtic have struggled in 20-21. The French centre-back was a bit of a flyer from Celtic’s point of view, but has been an excellent signing.

Jullien’s tweet included four photos of himself and the now-former Celtic manager, captioned:

“Thank you Coach for believing in me and for the memories. Good Luck !”

Christopher Jullien: vital to Neil Lennon and the good times in second spell

Jullien was absolutely vital to Lennon’s Celtic. The Lurgan-born ex-boss clearly planned to build a back 3 around the former Toulouse man and Kristoffer Ajer, with Shane Duffy in on loan to compliment the pair.

Sadly, it didn’t work out. Jullien was already struggling with injuries coming into the 20-21 campaign. Those struggles were compounded after a freak accident during Celtic’s win over Dundee United. At best guess, we might not see Jullien play for Celtic again until November.

Possibly, Lennon was too reliant on Jullien and Ajer. When he had to make tactical changes, Duffy and Ajer were a preferred back-two, but simply didn’t work. Other combinations, mostly Bitton and Duffy, with Ajer on the right, were brutal. More recently, Stephen Welsh has played next to the Norwegian Ajer in the heart of the Bhoys’ defence.

While Jullien played his heart out for Lennon, and will be sad to see him go, his future may be brighter under a more technically-minded coach. The Frenchman can definitely improve on his passing and aerial defending, going forward.

However, for now, Jullien’s heartfelt message for his former boss will tug at Hoops heartstrings worldwide.
